Learn From Us

From Learners to Leaders
At Annunciation, our great teachers are our secret sauce - it is our teachers' love, dedication, expertise, and commitment to professional growth that enable our school to sustain a vibrant culture and accomplish inspiring things in our classrooms. Through our partnership with EL Education, investment in our teachers' development has become a cornerstone of our educational model. We believe that teachers cannot be expected to hone their craft, excel in the classroom, and sustain passion for their work if they are not afforded opportunities for high-quality training. In keeping with this belief, we offer...
  • Monthly Full-Day Professional Developments (Facilitated in collaboration with EL Education and/or the Archdiocese of Denver Office of Catholic Schools)
  • Opportunities to Attend Educational Conferences, including the EL National Conference.
  • Off-campus Site Visits at Other Excellent Schools
  • On-site Instructional Coaching & Coaching Cycles with Level Teams
  • Opportunities to Lead & Facilitate Professional Development Sessions

About Professional Learning, Site Seminars, & Institutes

"The conversations and experiences were deeply impactful, and it is changing the way many of us think about how our classrooms run. (Annunciation's) staff and students were wonderful hosts. I can't wait to collaborate and share our resources... The staff at Annunciation are building a learning community that is becoming too valuable and too beautiful for the community of Cole to do without... It is an honor to now be part of the Annunciation family."
~ Participant Reflecting on his 2-day Site Seminar experience at Annunciation

ACS Students Presenting at CHR Deeper Learning Conference
February 2020 | Denver, CO
Our students were chosen to give the annual Student Presentation at the Christian Deeper Learning Conference in which they shared what they learned through their expeditions last year. Our students presented on the concept of identity through a skit that moved educators from around the world to tears. They received a standing ovation as they concluded their presentation.
ACS Team Presenting at CHR Deeper Learning Conference

January 2018 | Gainesville, FL

January 2018, our Principal Deb Roberts, 4th Grade Teacher Molly Newcomb, and 1st Grade Teacher Kathy Anderson were invited to present about promoting a robust school & staff culture at the CHR Deeper Learning Conference in Gainesville, Florida. Their session was standing-room only, and featured a great deal of resources focused on the use of "Crew" structures and practices (with students and crew with staff) to build and sustain culture.

Leading a Master Class at EL National Conference

October 2017 | Chicago, IL

Assistant Principal Robbie Bernardin & Middle School Math Teacher Jerilyn Manzella co-facilitated a Master Class at this year's EL National Conference in Chicago, IL. Their master class was called Making Mathematicians: Developing the Mathematical Thinking Skills that Propel Deep Learning, and focused on math instructional strategies to build self-efficacy and positive mindsets in students, promoting a "can-do" school culture around mathematics. Here is the full course description from the EL National Conference catalog... There is no such thing as “math people” and “non-math people.” Yet, many of us and our students believe that we are the latter, and often, our current approach to math instruction confirms rather than dismantles this view. However, by giving intentional instructional focus to the mental schema and cognitive competencies that undergird mathematical learning, we can turn hesitancy into confidence, failure into growth, and frustration into joy. In this master class, we will explore the mathematical Thinking Skills that support deep math learning, as well classroom practices that nurture and reinforce these Thinking Skills in our students and ourselves.
Hosting Site Seminar for 30 Educators From British Columbia, Canada

October 2017 | Annunciation, Denver, CO

As the second Catholic EL school in the nation, Annunciation Catholic School is swiftly building a reputation as an educational leader and a hub of innovation, especially among Christian and Catholic schools. Despite being a school with limited resources, Annunciation is pioneering new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, and setting an inspiringly high bar for student achievement. Frequently, Annunciation host's teachers, parents, and school leaders who come to experience firsthand the rigorous, joyful, experiential, and active culture of learning alive in its classrooms, and on account of this, word of Annunciation is spreading! Annunciation is quickly becoming a destination school of which people are saying, "You need to go see what they are doing at Annunciation. It will blow you away."

In October, Annunciation lead its first Professional Learning Site Seminar - an event where visiting educators pay to attend two days of facilitated on-site development to learn from what Annunciation does.
Over two days in October, 2017, Annunciation hosted over 30 Christian school leaders and educators from British Columbia, Canada for our "Be Doers of the Word, Not Hearers Only" Site Seminar. The focus and hope of this site seminar was threefold: to build community among innovative Christian educators; to collaboratively explore the structures and practices that Christian & Catholic schools can utilize to facilitate personally and communally transformative learning experiences for children, and to examine the school structures and conditions that give rise to a robust and active Christian culture of contagious joy, loving inclusion, and prophetic work that reaches beyond the classroom into the world.

Over the two days, visiting educators spent time in Annunciation classrooms, participated in group discussions and learning sessions, interviewed student and teacher panels, and enjoyed social and collaborative gatherings each afternoon and evening. Learning and best practices where shared, and collaborative relationships were formed across international borders, connecting educators from Annunciation with leaders and educators from the Prairie Center for Christian Education, Surrey Christian School, Centennial Christian School, Unity Christian School, and Cloverdale Christian School. This international relationship began through Annunciation's and Surrey Christian School's mutual connections with EL Education, and after a year of collaboration between administrators, this site seminar came to be. One participant reflecting on his two-day experience at Annunciation said, "The conversations and experiences were deeply impactful, and it is changing the way many of us think about how our classrooms run. Your staff and students were wonderful hosts. I can't wait to collaborate and share our resources as we journey the road of Christian education as two schools... The staff at Annunciation are building a learning community that is becoming too valuable and too beautiful for the community of Cole to do without... It is an honor to now be part of (your) Annunciation family."

This site seminar is not an end-point, but rather the debut of Annunciation as a visible and celebrated educational leader. In addition to hosting this site seminar, two Annunciation faculty went to Chicago at the end of October, 2017, to lead a Master Class at the EL Education National Conference, and two other faculty members led presentations at the CHR Deeper Learning Conference in Gainesville, Florida, in January, 2018, offering more opportunities to share the expertise, excellence, and innovation that have become the hallmarks of Annunciation Catholic School.

For the success of this site seminar, Annunciation is incredibly grateful to all of its faculty & students, as well as all of the visiting participants. Annunciation is also especially thankful to Director Darryl deBoer & the educators from Surrey Christian School; Gayle Monsma & the Prairie Center for Christian Education; visiting educators from Unity Christian School, Cloverdale Christin School, and Centennial Christian School; Principal David Roll & William Smith EL High School for hosting secondary teachers for an afternoon, and all of Annunciation's partners at EL Education and the Archdiocese of Denver Office of Catholic Schools.
