Summer Learning | Aprendizaje Durante el Verano

Important Note: Due to COVID-19 the building will be completely closed, and we are not able to offer middle school or elementary Summer Enrichment programs this summer (2020). We apologize and hope to offer our full programming again in summer 2021.

Studies show that students can lose half a year of academic growth or more over a summer, erasing much of the previous year’s gains, if their minds are not continually challenged.  Thus, Required Summer Learning & Academic Work (Reading, Math, & Social Studies) is an excellent way for each student to stay sharp academically, develop his or her skills in math and language arts, and be better prepared for school in the fall. It is obviously very important to relax and play over the summer, but it is equally important to engage in activities that keep your brain sharp and practiced.

At Annunciation, we believe that parents are the primary educators of their children and our role as teachers is to partner with you in this incredible work of educating your children. As such, we want to support you as you help your student “grow their brain” this summer while the students are on break. Below you will find the Summer Learning Requirements for each Middle School Student, as well as some concrete ways that you can support and further your child’s intellectual growth at home. Learning should never stop.

All of this information posted here is known to current students: students are already familiar with AR and Khan Academy, and know how to log in.

Learning Resources & Requirements | Summer 2020

Summer Reading
Make use of your public library to check out books that interest you. It is crucially important that kids read 30 minutes or more at home each night and practice writing about what you read. This habit will help students finish the books they must finish this summer, and this develops a confidence in and love of reading. Reading is a life-long learning habit that must be cultivated early. Parents can support their children by asking reflective questions about their books & modeling reading at home.
Elementary Requirements: Read 2 Books & Pass the AR tests.
Middle School Requirements: Read 3 Books, Keep “Reading Journal,” & Pass All 3 AR tests.
If you read more than 3 books (which we highly encourage because you have 2.5 months of free time), you will earn extra Crew Points, as well as other prizes in August.
Reading Resources:
>> Accelerated Reader: hosted132.renlearn.com/245287 – Visit this website to access AR tests (Accelerated Reader). If the book you read does not have an AR test, please write an extra 1-page summary of the book to be turned in in August, along with the reading journal questions.

Summer Mathematics
Bs sure to spend time this summer practicing your math skills! Khan Academy is an incredible web tool with an enormous number of math tutorial videos (at every level of mathematics) and practice problems to help each student practice their skills and improve. Sundog is also an excellent website for younger students to use to practice math facts and fluency. If you lack internet or a computer at home, visit your local public library, or use a smart phone to access the website.
Elementary Requirements: Spend 8 Hours practicing math on Sumdog.
Middle School Requirements:
Log 15 “Active” Hours of Learning & Practice on Khan Academy.
If you log more than 15 hours (which we highly encourage because you have 2.5 months of free time), you will earn extra Crew Points, as well as other prizes in August.
Math Resources:
>> Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/login – Visit this website to access Khan Academy. Click the “Log In” button, and log in with “Google” – using your school email address. Make sure that Ms. Manzella & Mr. Bernardin are added as your coaches. Remember… your coach (Ms. Manzella & Mr. Bernardin) can track how many “active” hours you spend.

Summer Social Studies
Over the summer, spend some time reading and learning about events going on in our community, our state, our nation, and our world. There are many news outlets and online resources to help you learn about current events.
Elementary Requirements: None.
Middle School Requirements:
Complete 10 Current Event Summaries.
Use Newsela.com, the Denver Post, National Public Radio, or another news source to complete 10 current event summaries. Learning Target: I CAN analyze current events to see how they impact the local and global community. Each current event must have 3 paragraphs that are the following… Paragraph 1 - Summary of event, Paragraph 2 - How does this event impact the global community?, and Paragraph 3 - How can this event impact me? These will be turned in to Mrs. Moncada on the first day of school.
Social Studies Resources:
>> Newsela: https://newsela.com - Visit this website to access news stories where the article can be adjusted (making it shorter and simpler, or longer and more difficult) to accommodate someone's reading level.

Summer Spirituality & Religion
It is important to make sure that we are not only "feeding our brains" over the summer, but also feeding our hearts and souls. This summer, make time to pray and attend church each weekend with your family, and live your spirituality.
Elementary Requirements: Say your prayers each day.
Middle School Requirements:
Attend Mass and Get a Signed Church Bulletin at least 6 times.
You must get 6 Church Bulletins signed by a priest as proof you have been going to Sunday Mass. Each child must ask Father to sign the bulletin at the end of Mass/ Church at whichever church he or she goes to.
Religion Resources:
>> Parish Locator: http://archden.org/parish-locator/ - Visit this website find the Catholic church closest to you.
>> Daily Readings:
